ICE shooting in backyard of House Immigration Subcommittee Chair

I am horrified to see one of our neighbors gunned down by ICE agents in unmarked vehicles. As we await more details on Mr. Hernandez and the situation that unfolded, one thing is clear: our community is terrified, angry, hurt, and we have lost trust in our federal government. We have seen the lies that this administration spread about Kilmar Ábrego García and the false terrorism accusations hurled at Renée Good and Alex Pretti immediately after their murders. We are seeing the same accusations of gang affiliation from ICE without any evidence.

Representative Tom McClintock, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration, has failed to uphold his Constitutional responsibility to oversee immigration enforcement. He has failed to ensure humane and responsible immigration enforcement tactics and neglected his duty to investigate clear instances of lying from this Administration, abuse of authority, constitutional violations, and crimes.

These types of dangerous encounters will continue to happen to families until ICE tactics are reined in. We need to protect our communities from illegal and unconstitutional harassment, focus immigration enforcement on actual threats to public safety, not hardworking people going about their lives, and conduct stronger congressional oversight of ICE.

I am calling for a full, transparent investigation by the FBI. I am also calling for the California Department of Justice to conduct its own parallel investigation so Californians can have more confidence in the outcomes.

My heart and deepest sympathies are with the Hernandez family, his fiancé and 2-year old child.
